Tired of Pretending Your Acne Scars are Freckles? We Can Help! | Chicago Facial Aesthetics

If you have ever experienced acne, you might be left with some frustrating acne scars. With laser acne scar removal, our facial aesthetics doctor in Chicago can help blast the scars away. It is one of the most powerful and effective ways to get smooth, clear skin.

Our highly effective laser system can help you get rid of acne scars from your teenage years. This non-surgical procedure can remove 50 to 80% of scar tissue in just one hour. Patients can usually return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure.

Those who have struggled with scarring for years can now renew their appearance and achieve higher levels of self-confidence with a healthier look. The following are some common questions about acne scars and laser scar removal:

How does acne scarring occur?

Severe acne breakouts can cause serious skin damage. The protein collagen, which makes up the structure and shape of your skin, helps your body repair itself. During our youth, collagen keeps our skin wrinkle-free. There are times when the collagen in your body can completely heal the affected area without affecting your skin’s color or texture. But in the case of acne scars, the healing process was incomplete. Therefore, the scars on your face remain visible.

Acne breakouts can sometimes cause scabs. Eventually, the scabs will fall off, revealing new skin underneath. It may be the same color as the skin around it, or it may be different. If it is different, you will have a scar. Fortunately, laser acne scar treatment helps your body finish the healing process it began.

What are the different types of acne scars?

Acne scars are not all the same. They vary greatly in shape and appearance. Here are some types of scars you might notice after a particularly tough acne battle:

  • Boxcar Scars Your skin can be affected by these scars at varying levels of depth. These scars have a wide, sharp edge and appear as U-shaped marks.
  • Ice Pick Scars Often, these scars are very deep. Occasionally, they can resemble chicken pox scars because they create small, round perforations in the skin.
  • Rolling Scars This type of scar causes wide indentations in the skin. In general, the marks it leaves on your skin are round and have a “rolling” appearance.

What are the benefits of laser acne scar removal?

  • Removing damaged tissue In this procedure, a specialist uses a laser wand to remove acne scars from the skin’s surface. Light from the wand removes the damaged layers of your skin. After your skin has grown back, the new cells will show less evidence of the acne that was present. As a result, both the color and texture of your scars will be improved.
  • Using the Blood Vessels in Your Skin By reaching deep into your skin’s blood vessels, laser acne removal technology can be used to reduce scar discoloration. It minimizes the contrast between your scarred area and the rest of your face.
  • Stimulation of Collagen Production The laser can stimulate collagen production when it penetrates deeply into your skin. This will allow your body to heal your skin on its own.

How Safe Is The Treatment?

Laser treatments are a non-invasive way to improve acne scars. They involve equipment specifically designed for cosmetic purposes and are FDA approved. With lasers, the deeply scarred areas of your skin can be treated without affecting the surrounding tissues.

How Long Will It Take for Me to Recover After This Treatment?

There is no need to plan a lot of downtime after this procedure. Following treatment, most people can return to work or school the next day. After treatment, your skin usually regenerates within three to ten days. During this period, you may see significant initial improvements followed by gradual improvements.

Following your laser acne scar removal procedure, there are some measures you can take to help your skin adjust more quickly. For example, you should avoid sun exposure and refrain from wearing makeup for a couple of days. Skincare recommendations also include washing your face daily and keeping the treated area moisturized.

Is this treatment suitable for everyone?

All types and tones of skin can benefit from Laser Acne Scar Removal. You may find this treatment particularly helpful if you have trouble treating breakouts. If you spent a long time recovering from acne, your scarring may be more extensive. In this case, laser treatment is an excellent option for minimizing the appearance of your scars.

Dealing with acne is unpleasant, and chances are that you don’t cherish those memories. Laser technology can help you get rid of acne scars, which are an unpleasant reminder of a condition you have had in the past. Finally, you can get the clear, even skin tone you’ve always wanted. Facial Cosmetic Surgery or Maxillofacial Surgery? | Facial Aesthetics in Chicago IL

When most people think of cosmetic surgery, they think of a traditional facelift, but maxillofacial surgery covers a wide range of procedures, from brow sculpting to rhinoplasty to laser resurfacing.

Several cosmetic procedures are available for the correction of specific conditions in cosmetic maxillofacial surgery. Due to technological advancements in medical devices and biomaterials, many cosmetic maxillofacial procedures can be performed in the office of a facial cosmetic specialist under local anesthesia. Some procedures may require an outpatient facility or a hospital for same-day surgery.

Facelift Cosmetic Surgery

Rhytidectomy, or facelift, is a surgical procedure used to address the visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Cosmetic surgery facelifts include the traditional facelift, the limited-incision facelift, and the neck lift.

  • Traditional Facelift In a traditional facelift, fat can be sculpted or redistributed around the face, neck, and jowls. It involves repositioning the underlying tissue and lifting the deeper layers of the face and muscles. The skin is then redraped over the contours, and any excess skin is trimmed away.
  • Limited-incision facelifts Often referred to as “mini-lifts,” these full-facelift alternatives are performed on patients who have less skin relaxed. The effects are more subtle and less rejuvenating.
  • Necklift Often, a neck lift is performed at the same time as a facelift, although it can also be performed separately. With neck lifts, loose neck skin, sagging jowls, and excess fat under the chin are addressed.

Botox

As a brand name, Botox refers to a form of botulinum toxin type A that is used for cosmetic purposes. When injected into the skin of the face, it temporarily reduces or eliminates fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, forehead creases, frown lines, and crow’s feet are treated with botulinum toxin type A. The procedure can also be used to treat thick jaw muscles, thick bands in the neck, gummy smiles, and lip lines.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to add volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. During aging, people tend to lose subcutaneous fat (fat underneath the skin), which makes the skin appear loose or saggy and causes wrinkles. Additionally, as we age, our facial skin stretches a bit, leading to a loss of youthful volume and firmness. Genetics, smoking, and other lifestyle choices can also influence how quickly your skin ages.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is also referred to as laser vaporization, lasabrasion, or a laser peel. Laser resurfacing uses short, pulsating, concentrated beams of light to target problem areas on the skin. One layer at a time, the laser burns away damaged skin.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance or function. Surgery is sometimes performed to reduce the size or change the shape of the nose. It can also be used to correct breathing problems caused by defects.

Blepharoplasty

An eyelift procedure called blepharoplasty removes excess fat and tissue from your eyelids and/or beneath your eyes. The most common reason for this procedure is under-eye bags that create a perpetually tired appearance. Additionally, it helps treat sagging eyelids that can obstruct vision.

Brow lift

In a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, the eyebrows are raised higher on the face in a more youthful position. As a result, you will be able to reduce wrinkles on your forehead and between your eyes. Furthermore, a brow lift improves frown lines between the eyebrows and raises sagging brows that create a hooded look above the eyes.

We offer a variety of services in our facial cosmetics office. For information on any of the procedures we discussed or if you are interested in other procedures we offer, please contact our facial aesthetics office in Chicago, IL to schedule a consultation.

Is Genioplasty the Answer for Your Chin? | Facial Aesthetics in 60619

Woman looking at her face in the mirror Timeless Beauty

Are you ever self-conscious about the appearance of your chin or your profile in photographs? If this is the case, your chin may be too small or too large compared to your nose.

It’s likely you’ve heard about genioplasty if you’re thinking about changing your appearance. There are many people who get this surgery to change the shape of their faces, but what is it?

Genioplasty is a surgery to alter the chin. In addition to being used to aid breathing in the upper airway, it can also be used for cosmetic purposes. The procedure involves operating on bones, and it takes around 6–8 weeks to heal. You should plan to eat soft foods for some time afterward.

Types of genioplasty surgery

Understanding what each type of genioplasty involves is essential before undergoing any surgery. They are as follows:

Sliding genioplasty: A surgeon will use a saw to remove parts of the jaw. As a result, they can move it into place and then create different looks. This procedure uses the patient’s own bone.

A Chin Implant: A chin implant is a form of genioplasty that uses an implant instead of the patient’s own bone to create the desired look.

Depending on the patient’s needs, a facial cosmetics specialist will determine if sliding genioplasty or chin surgery is the right procedure for them. Patients who desire a fuller look in their jaws will most likely undergo chin implants. A sliding genioplasty can only be performed if the patient is removing parts of the bone to create a smaller chin.

Genioplasty Surgery

Having genioplasty surgery is not an easy procedure, and the recovery time can take up to eight weeks. You should follow whatever instructions your surgeon gives you for the best results. The following are some other things you should know about genioplasty recovery:

  • Surgery is invasive on the face, which means swelling and bruising are likely to occur. When it comes to such a hefty procedure, it is perfectly normal. Cold compresses help reduce swelling. A lot of water helps with healing.
  • After two weeks, you can return to work. You will need to take extra precautions to ensure there are no facial injuries. You can gradually resume regular activity after the third week.
  • Sports should be avoided until fully healed. The bone is soft after surgery, so any sort of injury could ruin it.
  • For the next few days, avoid using a toothbrush. During this time, a glycerin swab will help keep things clean.
  • Recovery requires your chin to have little impact, so you always need to consider whether any activity will move it.
  • Post-operative pain can be managed with prescribed medication. Additional painkillers should only be used with the surgeon’s approval.
  • After one day, you can take a shower. You need to wash your face gently, as rubbing too hard could move your chin. Use caution when washing your face.

It should be relatively straightforward to recover if you follow these steps, but always remember to seek the advice of your facial cosmetics specialist.

Consider genioplasty surgery if you wish to improve the appearance of your chin. Contact our Facial Aesthetics in Chicago, IL office to schedule an appointment. We are happy to assist you.

The Nose Knows Rhinoplasty Surgery | Cornell McCullom, DDS

Doctor bandaging woman's nose Facial Aesthetics Chicago

There are numerous reasons why someone might consider getting a nose job, not the least of which is that it is often necessary simply as a cosmetic procedure. Even if your peers do not consider it an issue, you may feel that your nose is too big, too small, misshapen, or possesses other defects that make you feel uncomfortable and depressed and have a negative effect on your mental health.

Of course, it is also possible that you have breathing difficulties that require surgery so that you can live a normal life alongside everyone else. Regardless of your reasons for considering a nose job, there are certain things you should keep in mind before committing.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty refers to a “nose job” in the medical world. Our highly qualified and experienced Facial Aesthetics in Chicago has performed many of these procedures and is fully qualified to perform the surgery you desire. In the case of nose reduction, we remove some cartilage or bone from the nose. In the case of nose augmentation, we make the nose bigger. To achieve the latter, bone could be harvested from the hips, skull, or elbow, along with cartilage from the ears, and used to construct the nose.

By breaking the nose bone and rearranging the cartilage, it is possible to alter your nose’s angle with your mouth or the shape of your nose. The skin covering the nose should simply expand or contract to fit the new shape.

The procedure can be performed by either cutting across the skin between the nostrils or by making small incisions inside the nostrils. Known as “closed rhinoplasty,” this type of operation does not leave scars and causes less swelling, but is not always possible. The former is called “open rhinoplasty,” but our Chicago Facial Aesthetics specialist recommends closed rhinoplasty whenever possible.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

As part of the recovery process, we may place a splint around or inside your nose. Using bandages or splints will protect the structures and cartilage of your nose as it heals. During the first week after surgery, you may experience swelling. As soon as this subsides, you will be able to see the final results of your rhinoplasty.

Your nose may gradually change throughout the first year. This occurs as the nose refines itself into its permanent shape. Most people return to work after 1-2 weeks, although strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month following surgery.

If the surgery is performed by a trained expert at our Facial Aesthetics in 60619 office, you can expect lasting and aesthetically pleasing results. We carefully perform every procedure to ensure optimum results, minimal scarring, and to answer any questions you may have along the way. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Busting Common Botox Myths

Botox is among the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatments thanks to its ability to quickly and effectively erase unwanted wrinkles and expression lines. One of the downsides of its widespread popularity, however, is the proliferation of a number of Botox “myths.” Read on as we help to separate fact from fiction regarding this celebrated beauty booster.

Myth: Botox produces immediate results.

Fact: While Botox does offer quick results, they are not immediate. The full effects are gradual and subtle and typically visible within 3 to 7 days following your injection.

Myth: Botox is permanent.

Fact: While there are some cosmetic treatments that offer permanent results, Botox is not one of them. Botox provides temporary removal of frown lines, wrinkles and unwanted expression lines, with results that typically last 3 to 6 months. The length of time that Botox lasts for you will depend on a number of factors, including how often you have repeat treatments and where the Botox is injected.

Myth: Botox is only for women.

Fact: Many men are now enjoying the youth-enhancing benefits of Botox. Due to the stronger facial muscles that men have, a higher dosage of Botox is usually required for desired results to be achieved, but many men are finding it to be well worth the effort and investment.

Myth: Botox makes your face look frozen.

Fact: This is a major misconception that has been perpetuated by photos of individuals who did not have Botox injected correctly by a cosmetic expert. When done properly, Botox produces very natural results and provides you with a refreshed, not frozen, look.

Myth: Botox is only effective after wrinkles appear.

Fact: More and more younger patients are using Botox as a preventative treatment before fine lines and wrinkles become an issue. If you wait until after the signs of aging become problematic, it may actually be more difficult to achieve the results you want. Preventative use of Botox can also help to train muscles to not make certain expressions, lessening the amount of fine lines and wrinkles that can appear due to these repetitive movements.

Botox remains one of the most popular anti-aging injections performed in the U.S., thanks to its proven results, safety and predictable outcomes. If you’ve been curious about Botox and are wondering if it is the right choice for you, contact Timeless Beauty for a consultation.

Chicago IL Facial Cosmetics | Listen Up: Treatment Options For Your Split Earlobes

Nothing completes an outfit like the perfect set of earrings. Unfortunately, if earrings are too heavy or get caught on something, it can result in your ear lobe being torn or split in half. While there are other reasons that an ear lobe may get torn, this is by far the most common reason.

Made of skin and fatty tissue, your earlobes are fairly flexible, but not as strong as the rest of your cartilage-based ear. As a result, when your lobe is pierced, it significantly weakens the structure. When too much force is put on this region, it can cause the skin to stretch or split. Either by an accidental tearing, or the gradual stretching that comes from wearing heavy earrings frequently for years, split earlobes are relatively common.

Luckily, Dr. Cornell McCullom has the expertise to be able to safely and effectively repair torn earlobes. Using some of the same principles that come into play when your ear is first pierced, Dr. McCullom can stitch the skin together to promote healing and hold your skin together. In 3-6 months, your ear will be as good as new.

By then, most patients will be able to re-pierce their ears and enjoy wearing earrings again if they please. Schedule an appointment with Timeless Beauty today to talk with Dr. McCullom about repairing your split earlobe.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Why Cosmetic Treatments are Worth the Investment

Feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin is a necessity, and something that everyone should be lucky enough to experience on a daily basis. New cosmetic treatment options are released each year, focusing on different areas of the body. These diverse aesthetic solutions allow us to enhance our physical appearance and improve our self-esteem more than ever before.

Both men and women alike can experience the results of cosmetic treatment, including what it does for their overall morale and body image. Unfortunately, some individuals feel hesitant about investing in cosmetic treatments for financial reasons. Although the associated costs can play a factor when it comes to selecting treatment, the overall investment is worthwhile and long term. If you’re someone who’s on the fence about scheduling a cosmetic enhancement consultation, here are a couple of reasons why there’s no time like the present.

Improved Confidence and Self-Esteem

Research shows that investing in cosmetic treatment can have positive effects on a person’s self-esteem and level of confidence. In turn, those enhancements can lead to improvements in other areas of their lives, including personal relationships and professional interactions. You might find that the personal investment you’ve made affects your lifestyle in ways that you never expected.

A large percentage of young people admit that they struggle with low self-esteem, and it’s common to see those numbers increase as people get older. Cosmetic treatments have proven to be an effective option for a lasting boost of self-confidence.

Long-Lasting Effects

A notable advantage of investing in a cosmetic treatment is how long-lasting the effects can be. Maintenance, or the lack thereof, makes it simple to preserve your results for an extended

period of time.  Depending on the type of treatment you select, you may have little to no recovery period, or only require a few days of rest before getting back to your normal routine.

If you’re considering cosmetic treatments or a physical aesthetic enhancement, contact Timeless Beauty today for a private consultation.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Could an Eyelid Lift Be the Cosmetic Solution You’re Searching For?

The stresses of daily life can take their toll on us physically. Stress, regardless of its source, can show on our faces and cause us to look tired and older than we are. Luckily, there’s a way to fight back. If you need a little “pick me up”, Blepharoplasty (or eyelid lift) may be the ideal cosmetic solution for you.

Why Should I Consider An Eyelid Lift?

As we age, the muscles around our eyes can weaken. This natural aging process eventually causes the skin to look wrinkled and eyelids may sag, bags may appear under our eyes, or we may see puffiness above and below the eyelids. This procedure eliminates the extra skin to achieve a more youthful look around our eyes, and in some cases, it can even improve your vision.

What does an Eyelid Lift Procedure Entail?

Dr. Cornell McCullom has been trusted by patients for over 18 years to provide cosmetic treatments, including a Blepharoplasty. Our knowledgeable and experienced facial aesthetics team will eliminate the extra skin and fat around your eyes to restore a natural, more vibrant appearance. The procedure involves making an incision on the fold of the eyelid. It generally takes less than a couple of hours to complete and recovery time is about a week.

If you’ve been considering cosmetic treatment, or want to discuss your options to refresh and revive your appearance, let’s talk. Simply contact our facial aesthetics office in Chicago for more information.

Chicago IL Facial Cosmetics | Basic Skin Care Rules & Best Practices

Eat Healthily

The old adage claims that “you are what you eat.” The skin is the largest organ in our body. Over 30% of what we consume goes directly towards nourishing our skin. A diet rich in beta-carotene helps to support collagen production. Collagen is, of course, one of the major building blocks of bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. A diet of multi-colored fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants is key. Dark leafy greens, berries, and even healthy fats like avocado are beneficial to your skin.

In addition to eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, try to avoid excessive caffeine intake. Unfortunately, this will disappoint many of our coffee drinkers who enjoy multiple cups of coffee each day. Caffeine in coffee, sodas and energy drinks can dry out the skin. Instead, supplement your meals with green tea or water.

Hydrate

We may think of needing water only when we are thirsty or during exercise. The reality is that we need to stay hydrated all day long. Water can invigorate the cell tissue in the skin. It keeps the skin from becoming dehydrated and from drying. It also works towards maintaining the skin’s elasticity (preventing wrinkles) as we grow older. Start every morning off with a fresh glass of water followed with regular intervals throughout the day.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating on a daily basis helps to remove dead skin cells and toxins from your body. It is a means of deep cleaning your pores so as to promote collagen production, new cell growth, and new product absorption. It is recommended to exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. In lieu of harsh exfoliating scrubs, people with sensitive skin may opt instead for using an exfoliating mask.

Daily Cleansing

There are many reasons to incorporate a daily cleansing routine on your skin. Cleansing thoroughly cleans and detoxifies the skin while keeping it perfectly hydrated and balanced. It will work wonders to remove dirt, toxins, and buildup from your pores. Think of this routine as a decongestant for your body. You want cleansing to support the natural hydration balance found within your skin. To this extent, try to avoid any cleanser that has soap or alcohol as its base. There are many soap-free products on the marketplace that will exfoliate, provide a deep clean and also maintain hydration. At the very least you should cleanse in the evening to remove any and all makeup before you go to bed.

Sunscreen

Wrinkles, fine lines and sunspots are all caused by the harmful UV rays from our sun.  These rays can inflict damage on both the uppermost and deeper layers of our skin. Applying a “broad spectrum” sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 is key. Despite what many think, our skin can get damaged by the sun at any point of the year and even when the sky looks cloudy. Sunscreen is best applied after all of your other skin-care products have been put on. Allow a few minutes for it to penetrate your skin before you apply any makeup.

Moisturize

Our deepest layer of skin, known as the dermis, produces a natural moisturizer known as hyaluronic acid. This substance reinforces the collagen in our skin and helps it maintain its elastic, youthful appearance. As we grow older, the production of this acid decreases in our bodies.  Wrinkles and lines begin to appear as the dermis becomes brittle and dry. It’s important to supplement this loss with a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid.

Manage Stress

When left unchecked, stress can make our skin a playground for acne and other blemishes. To counteract this, take measured steps to manage the stress in your life. Work towards achieving healthier skin and a sound state of mind. Instill a routine that allows you to get enough sleep each night. Establish limits on your workload and be sure to make time to do things that you find enjoyable.

If you’d like more skincare tips or would like to discuss a professional cosmetic procedure, contact Timeless Beauty. Our Chicago Facial Comstic doctor is here to help you achieve the natural-looking results you’ve always wanted.
